Country music, also called country and western, style of 20th-century American popular music that originated among whites in rural areas of the South and West produced by those that live more rural lifestyles who usually live in the southern and western parts of America, with an exception of a few northern American or foreign singers or groups. The music typically tells a story and is about lifestyle, hard-work, or a wide variety of subjects. In recent years the genre has largely grown in popularity by quickly changing it’s style and crossing over into other popular genres such as rock, rap, and mostly pop.
